What exactly is a text shortcut?
It’s a short trigger, like /sig, paired with a longer piece of text. When you finish typing the trigger in a supported text field, Ziptype replaces it with your saved text. Try the interactive demo at the top of this page.
Where does Ziptype work?
The Chrome extension works in supported website text fields and rich-text editors. The Mac app uses Accessibility permission to expand shortcuts in supported desktop apps. Some custom editors and protected fields may not support expansion.
Do I need an account?
No. You can create and use shortcuts locally without signing in. An account is optional and used for cloud sync and sharing features.
Can I save my AI prompts?
Yes. Save a reusable prompt as a text shortcut, organize it in a folder, and expand it in a supported editor. Ziptype reuses your saved words; it doesn’t generate text with AI.
How do I save and reuse a prompt in different AI tools?
Save the prompt text in Ziptype and assign a shortcut such as /review. Open a supported text field in your AI tool and type the shortcut. Your saved prompt appears, ready for you to add context and submit. Organize related prompts in folders so you can update and reuse the same instructions.
How is a prompt library different from clipboard history?
A prompt library deliberately stores reusable instructions under memorable names or shortcuts. Clipboard history keeps items you recently copied. Ziptype suits recurring text you want to organize and call up by typing; clipboard history is useful for recent, temporary content.
How much time can text expansion save?
It depends on snippet length, typing speed, and frequency. In the calculator’s default example, a 100-word prompt at 40 words per minute takes 150 seconds to type; a six-character shortcut takes an estimated 1.8 seconds. Reusing it 20 times a day avoids about 49.4 minutes of typing, excluding setup and editing. Change the assumptions to reflect your work.
Are my prompts local or synced?
Your library is stored locally by default. Optional sign-in enables account-based cloud sync and sharing. Ziptype does not generate AI responses: you choose which content to submit to another application. Avoid putting passwords or other secrets in reusable prompts.
How do I install it?
Read the Mac setup notes, download the installer and move Ziptype to Applications. Grant Accessibility permission when you’re ready to try expansion. For Chrome, open the official Ziptype Chrome Web Store listing, choose Add to Chrome, and review the requested permissions. Pin Ziptype to your toolbar and create a shortcut.
